In a profession that often feels like a race against the clock, where teachers work an average of 57 hours per week, finding tools that reduce workload without compromising the quality of teaching is critical. During our recent webinar, "Unlocking the Power of AI", Mr P ICT - an experienced primary teacher and AI advocate - delivered an insightful session on how AI can revolutionise classrooms, providing practical tips and inspiring educators to reimagine their roles.
Here are the standout lessons from the session, along with actionable ways you can embrace AI for better teaching outcomes.
The AI advantage for educators: work smarter, not harder
Mr P ICT began by addressing a common concern: AI isn’t here to replace teachers - it’s here to support them. Generative AI, powered by large language models like ChatGPT, has the potential to reduce the overwhelming admin burden on teachers. Tasks like lesson planning, generating differentiated materials, and even admin tasks like performance management templates can be automated.
Mr P has co-created Teach Mate AI, a platform designed specifically for educators. From creating social stories for SEND pupils to generating flashcards or quizzes tailored to specific topics, these tools aren’t just time-savers; they also empower teachers to focus on what truly matters: connecting with students and delivering impactful lessons.
Empowering students with AI: accessibility and personalised learning
AI isn’t just a game-changer for teachers - it’s also transforming the learning experience for students. For example, Google’s Notebook LM enables personalised support by allowing students to upload homework and have it explained in accessible ways, such as through AI-generated podcasts.
Additionally, AI-powered tools can support students' understanding by generating instant feedback, custom quizzes, or revision aids. However, Mr P stressed the importance of fostering intellectual integrity - educating students on using AI to support their learning rather than bypassing critical thinking.
Balancing the positives with caution
While the potential of AI is vast, Mr P emphasised a thoughtful approach to its use. Educators must critically evaluate AI-generated content to ensure accuracy and relevance. The technology isn’t infallible - “hallucinations” (AI-generated inaccuracies) can occur, making a teacher’s professional judgement essential in refining outputs.
Moreover, safeguarding students from misuse is crucial. For instance, social media algorithms - a prominent form of AI - can expose users to harmful or misleading content. As parents and educators, understanding and controlling these algorithms can help create a safer digital environment for young people.
AI in action: building a better future for education
The big takeaway? AI isn’t just about saving time; it’s about reshaping education for the better. By automating admin tasks and making learning more inclusive and engaging, AI allows teachers to reclaim their time and invest it where it matters most - nurturing the potential of every student.
As Mr P said, “AI should take away the admin so we can focus on the human element of education”. From marking essays to creating individualised learning plans, AI offers the tools to ensure teaching remains impactful, even in a challenging system.
